Orchid update

Last Christmas I posted a photo of one of my orchid plants that was about to bloom. Some of my blog readers didn’t even believe that it was for real. Others asked me to keep them posted. Well, that’s what I’m doing today.

My most recent plant, which is an anniversary present, is about to shed its last flowers. It has lasted just over two months. Not bad, considering the not-so-ideal orchid environment in my apartment.

The anniversary orchid about to shed its last flowers.

For my birthday, last year in April, I received this plant with lemon coloured flowers. It’s about to burst into flowers soon, so it will make a nice replacement for the above mentioned anniversary plant.

Finally, I have the two 2009 Saint Valentine’s orchids which are doing just fine and flowering as if it were spring.

Orchids blooming in spite of the snow outside.
(Also notice the poorly doing specimen in the middle!)

And there are the three plants that are doing really poorly. I fear they won’t last till summer. But then there will be room for a new one… which is an interesting idea with Saint Valentine coming up. Will you be celebrating Saint Val? Or do you think it’s just another clever merchansing trick?

Orchids are such beautiful flowers. I wonder if the orchid exhibition that we saw in Valencay last year will be doing the rounds again this year.

Nick bought a bright pink orchid in the sale in M&S - £14 reduced down to £5 - in December and it is flowering beautifully. It's on a windowsill where there is lots of light, not much heat and sunshine only in the early morning.

We once had one that looked dead so we relegated it to our "office" windowsill and months later it started to grow again. It flowered several times and lasted 2 years.

It was just luck I think - we're not brilliant with houseplants.

Jean, Orchids are very unpredictable. Sometimes, when you give them special care, they just don't seem to react. And, all of a sudden, when you're about to give up, they start flowering again.

Very impressive Martine! They must like that spot. Give them humidity, orchid food.
I don't have a "Valentin" so I won't celebrate but in the US, you don't have to have a lover to celebrate. They have cards for kids, parents, special this and that... People at work bring chocolates, flowers... What was once "la fete des amoureux" turned into "everybody's a Valentine". I am sending a card to my ex-in-laws and my parents, and 2 of my girlfriends (who are divorced).

Nadege, Thank you.

What a nice idea to extend Valentine to all the people you care for. Maybe I should start this trend in Belgium too.

Martine, "the blue lantern" is about Anna Boch today. http://thebluelantern.blogspot.com/
Interesting, the past few days I have to type my name and password to leave a comment only on your blog.

Nadege, I had to make some changes to the comment settings of my blog as there was dreadful guy who kept posting unappropriate comments about his girlfriend :(.
However, I hope it won't stop you from posting a comment whenever you feel like it. I really appreciate them. :)

Those are just gorgeous. You must have a green thumb.

Dedene, Thank you. Green thumb? I don't think so. These orchids have a mind of their own. Taking good care of them isn't a guarantee for success.

They sure don't look like plastic to me. You can't stop progress! LOL

Chm, Indeed! They even come with a built-in system that makes them shed their flowers after two months :^)
