A friendly lodger

While I was doing the dishes - aka loading the dishwasher - after Sunday lunch with my mother, I noticed a dark dot on the floor, just beneath the kitchen window. I had left it open while I was making the 'frites' (French fries).

It turned out to be a ladybird! I carefully picked it up and tried to set it free again. But the dark skies and strong winds clearly frightened it and it stuck to my finger like glue. In the end I managed to make it step unto the leaf of one of my orchid plants. When I tried to take its photo, it shyly scurried away, hiding in between the leaves. It took a bit of coaxing and manipulating, but in the end I managed to shoot this photo.

Since then the ladybird has settled in between the leaves of the orchid plants. I hope it'll find enough food there to survive until it is ready to move out again. Until then I consider it as a friendly lodger!

Cute! I think the mild temperatures has everything confused. It probably thinks it's spring.

In English English it is a bird and in American English it is a bug, but in both cases it is a Lady. There is no lady, bird nor bug involved in the name of these lovely [and friendly] creatures in French: Coccinelle.

What a special guest! And today I had a kookaburra which had not visited me in my vegetable garden for some weeks. Kookie looked at me with some level of arrogance. I gave him some chicken. And he gave me a song. I hope your ladybird enjoys your company Martine..

The Broad, I couldn't have said it any better :)

Diane, Wouldn't that be fun?! Hope he brought some nice wine...

N&A, And now it has moved into some exotic plants! Could it be any luckier?

Gaynor, Outch, catering for a whole family of ladybirds could be a bit of a problem!

Chm, I remember that it took me ages to 'master' the French name; I kept saying COCOcinelle! Maybe I was influenced by Coco Chanel :)

Louise, I'm afraid my ladybird won't surprise me with a song ... or it would have to be a very silent one. Do you think they scream when you accidently step on their toes?

We've been seeing quite a few coccinelles in our house this so-called winter, along with the dreaded punaises (stinkbugs) and flies. It's warm enough for them to survive outside, but they come in if they can for even greater comfort.

They are clever little critters, aren't they? And I don't mind having them in the house. I'm not so sure about the stinkbugs though! :)
