A springtime crush

In the spring of 1974 I visited Paris on a three-day school trip. We stayed two nights in some kind of youth hostel close to the Pont Neuf. Our class shared the first floor with a group of German students, who were more or less of the same age. In the evening we used to gather and hang out on the first floor landing where two or three old and worn, yet very comfortable coaches had been installed ... Much to our teachers’ dismay – we were a very strict all-girls’ school, and boys were seen as a menace!

It was all very friendly and innocent though, with brain-wrecking and sometimes hilarious conversations in a multi-lingual gibber that was a mixture of French, English and German. And that is where and how I met Jürgen G., the boy whom in the autumn of the same year sent me the postcard from Hessen that I mentioned in my previous post.

Before seeing the card I had completely forgotten about our meeting. That is why it took me over 48 hours to remember where I might have met this ‘Jürgen’. And when it finally came back to me, the only details I could come up with were that he was tall, had slightly curly shoulder-long hair (very fashionable in the 70ties) and unusual dark blue eyes. I guess I must have had a short and silly teenage crush on him.

The postcard was the last I ever heard from him. Although I’m not interested in contacting or seeing him again, I followed The Beaver’s advice (see yesterday’s comments) and googled his name. His first name and surname being very common in Germany, there are several Jürgen G.’s on Facebook, too many in fact to even consider doing further research …

However, finding his card after almost 40 years made a good blog topic, didn’t it? Especially at a time that there is nothing happening in my daily life that’s worth writing about …

These experiences, however fleeting, still count in our lives. I am back in contact with my first boyfriend from 1974. He lives in the US, we have children of similar ages. It's a joy to share memories. And I am lucky to count him as one of my oldest friends! And from Australia I always enjoy your posts of everyday life Martine.

All these encounters shape our lives in some small way, and it's nice on a cold winter's afternoon to sit with an old postcard, a mug of hot chocolate and think "what if....."

He's probably an axe murderer in jail now ...... only kidding !!!

PS I almost nominated you for an award, but somebody else got there first !!

This sounds like me trying to look up someone in Holland called Hans Van Wyk, I cannot tell you how many there are!!
Interesting post though, and I am sure it brought back many memories for you. Diane

Martine

By pugging in some key words like : name , school and/or city on those search engines, you will be surprised at what can come up. On a cold day , with nothing to do, just give it a try: you never know ....( just for curiosity's sake and just to be able to know what he has been doing )

PS: WV =devil ( i must be one ) LOL!!!!

Kathie, To be honest, I had completely forgotten about him. Our brief encounter was like two ships passing in the dark ...

Louise, It isn't even a old boyfriend. Just someone I met and exchanged addresses with ... in an attempt to learn German. His blue eyes just made a nice extra!

Mark, No, I don't think so. His last postcard made it very clear that I hadn't left an everlasting impression :)

Jean, Thank you for considering me for the award. I feel really flattered! x

Diane, Welcome and thank you for posting a comment and becoming a follower.
It's funny how many people have the same name, isn't it? I know of someone in Belgium who shares my name, because one day I received her (excessive) telephone bill. A situation I managed to set straight without having to pay it first.

The Beaver, Ahah, you are the little devil sitting on my left shoulder whispering in my ear to google Jürgen once more!!! But the little angel on my right shoulder has better arguments not to do it :))

N&A, The weather people expect a warm weekend ... I think it's wiser to go for a walk on Sunday afternoon instead of googling ghosts from the past.
Thanks for the lovely award. It is nice to feel appreciated. x
