Time to part

Don’t worry, the title has nothing to do with me continuing blogging or not … although I do admit that I’ve been absent for a while. But, as mentioned before, February is such an un-inspirational month that I find it hard to come up with catchy subjects to entertain you.

However, today something has come up. Something new and challenging! I want to get on eBay! I’m not keen about the idea, but it’s the only way not to let ‘valuable’ items go to waste.

I’ve mentioned before that my mother is de-cluttering in an attempt to make life easy for me when she eventually dies … which I hope will not be for another twenty years or so. I have also mentioned that my father used to work from 1948 till 1980 as a flight engineer and technical controller with Sabena, Belgium’s national airway company. When in 2001 the company went bankrupt due to ill-management by its new partner Swissair, my father had already died; four years before his lifetime dream’s bankruptcy. I’m so happy he never lived to see the images of the return of the last Sabena flight to its home base in November 2001, where it was given a last salute by the Brussels’ airport fire brigade.

Photo from the internet:
Sabena poster promoting the World Fair in Brussels in 1958.

But back to eBay. In the days that Sabena was still a well-reputed company they used to publish a kind of year-book with brilliant photos of their destinations and achievements over the last 365 days. My father had a subscription to the series and my mother has kept all the volumes since the early sixties till … I don’t quite know. I know they cost 300 Belgian Francs then (+/- 7.5 euro nowadays). I also remember us being very proud of them  showing them all the time to whoever was interested.

Now my mother wants to chuck them with the waste paper. I just can’t bear the thought. But I don’t have room to keep them myself. As I’m an only child having no children of my own, I think it would be right to ‘offer’ the books to someone who really appreciates them: a former Sabena employee maybe who has (grand)children and who feels the same pride my father had towards his employer. So I want to sell them on eBay. That way I’m sure they won’t end up with someone who has no respect for them. Have you ever sold anything on Ebay, and can you give me some tips! I surely would appreciate them? Thank you in advance.

this will sell on ebay and there are lots of people that like airplane memorabilia. also, some airplane museums might like some copies as well as Brussels Airport. i would think the 1958 edition would be pretty valuable, due to the world's fair. I don't know how to sell on ebay, guess I also need to learn since I have some things I need to sell. Good luck.

Ebay is a great way to dispose of previously loved items. It's easy to do once you get started - slow at first but you soon get the hang of it - although it's a while since I actually sold anything on Ebay myself.

If you look up similar items to the ones that you're thinking of selling and "watch" them for a while you will see how much interest there is and whether it's worth the trouble.

I have sold a few things on E-bay -- my father's collection of almost 4,000 classical LP's -- for a song, but to a good home and a model train locomotive for my husband -- it sold for a very good price to a buyer in New Zealand who had to pay the postage on top.

You have to join E-bay and you need a paypal account -- at least in the States and in England. If you go onto e-bay, you will find the links to setting it up and it really is very straight-forward. Definitely worthwhile for something like airline memorabilia!

Here in the States we also have Craiglist. I don't really know how it works, but a friend of mine uses it and is happy with it and has sold or bought items that way.

Bob, Thank you. I'll try and set up an account this weekend. Maybe the sale will generate some extra pocket money for my upcoming trip to France :)

Jean, I had a look at eBay and was a bit disappointed by what I saw. There are three simular books on offer for the moment, at 10 tot 15 euro a piece, but nobody seems to be interested so far.

Kathie, The demand for airline memorabilia isn't really spectacular from what I saw on eBay with 'first flight' stamped envelopes selling at 1,50 euro :(

Chm, Thank you. I'll check it out!

Martine, I have only bought on Ebay. But we have in Australia a site called GumTree on which you can buy and sell for cash and carry only...my friends say it's wonderful. You have inspired me to clean out my cupboards. I have so much I have inherited from my late Naval Officer father. Good luck. The picture you posted is wonderful.

Louise, Our fathers lived an adventurous life. I find it hard to part with their memorabilia, but you can't keep stocking them, can you?
I agree with you, the poster is lovely! I wish I owned the original :)
