My neighbours across the landing are having a party. They've put up a note in the downstair's hallway informing the other tenants of the event, which has started at 4 p.m. and will probably go on till after midnight.
Since 5 p.m. I feel like living in a war zone. There is no music but a lot of screaming and a constant - really constant - banging sound caused by doors that are being slammed. Moreover, some very strange smells are coming out of their kitchen, floating onto the landing and seeping in under my front door, making my apartment smell like some bad quality exotic takeaway. I've opened a window to let some fresh air in, but the smell is very tenacious ...
As we have been warned and invited - the note was very explicit about that - we (the other tenants) are not really in a position to complain. Moreover, I want to remain on good terms with everybody ... but the banging sound is really nerve-wrecking and the smell is quite nauseating. In hope it won't cling to my hair and clothes when I go to work tomorrow!

Bon courage, Martine ...
So they are having a party on a Sunday and everyone has to go to work tomorrow !!!! Poor you and the other tenants . Bon courage and hope you can get some fresh air and a good rest.
You are lucky, our neighbours never warned us, or asked us to their parties in the UK. We would never have gone anyway, it sounded like a herd of wild animals in there, all drunk with plates or glasses being smashed at regular intervals. They did not go to work, so it went on until they fell over just in time for N to go to work after having no sleep. Thank goodness we are now in peaceful France. Yay. :) You have my sympathies. Diane
I just hope it won't last until the wee hours! As I am writing this, it is past 2:15 a.m. in Belgium and I hope your apartment building is now peaceful and quiet.
Oh Martine! I am so sorry for you. Because I live in a house I rarely have the problem you have endured with the food smells. But when my very wealthy neighbours recently had a party, they warned us all and then had the street closed...a complete lack of neighbourly courtesy...for me and you....
How horrible for you.
However much they may feel they deserve to have a party it's not fair to ruin another tenant's weekend, even if they have warned you.
I bet you wouldn't dream of doing such a thing yourself.
Even though you wish to stay on good terms with your neighbours I would be inclined to make my feelings known. If they think they have upset everyone they might not do it again in a hurry. If they react as if they don't give a toss then at least you know what you're up against, otherwise people start to take liberties, thinking they can behave badly and it doesn't matter.
How insensitive people can be and how horrible for you. It's always so difficult to know how to handle inconsiderate neighbours. I imagine other tenants in your building were not very happy either.
Gaynor, Thank you for your sympathy! It helps; it really does. I mean it!
The Beaver, I slept with the bedroom window open (despite the cold night air) and by this morning the foul smell was gone.
Diane, Thank you. I don't think they really expected/wanted any of the neighbours to turn up, but the 'invitation' is a clever way to stop us from complaining and spoiling the fun.
Chm, The last bunch of people left around midnight ... so when you wrote your comment I was probably and finally sound asleep.
Louise, How inconsiderate! You can't do that kind of thing in Belgium without the authorization of the village maire.
Jean, I even feel ill at ease when my lunch time guests speak or laugh too loud. I think I'll try to suppress that feeling from now on.
Kathie, I assume all the tenants felt the same, but I'm the only one who actually has to get up early to go to work. But I managed!
It might have ben a good idea to have put in a short appearance to check out the neighbours and the food but then I'm nosey!!!!!
Looks like we might get to Brussels afterall, I'll have a stern word with the neighbours for you (LOL)- Sue located a good price for TGV tickets. We'll be in contact via email very soon.
Leon
L&S, I'm sure the smell of the food would have put you off :)) I'll explain it all to you if and when you make it to Brussels. Looking forward to your e-mail ... and visit.
