Silent Wednesday

2008: A tantalizing plate of fried frog's legs with garlic butter
and pasta ... souvenir of a delicous meal at the
'Mange-Grenouille' (the Frog Eater) in Saint-Aignan.
Tempted anyone?

Looking for a nice restaurant in St Aignan to take friends to lunch or dinner. Any recommendations?

The first and only time I had frog legs was in China. I thought it was chicken. No thanks! but I will eat the pasta.

Leon, The 'Mange-Grenouille' near the bridge over the Cher River is the only restaurant we've actually been to in Saint-Aignan (except for the Vieux Moulin which is a hotel, without restaurant, nowadays). The food at the MG was great and we really had a splendid time. I know that Ken and Walt have mentioned several nice restaurants in SA, so maybe they can recommend another place.

Nadege, You surprise me! I thought that, because of your French roots, you would have liked frog's legs. BTW, the pasta was great too!

Martine - is it true that the legs are removed from the frogs when they are alive, or is it a rumour, one which has put me off them all my life ?

Jean, To be honest, I don't know ... and I don't want to know. There is a real controversy about it and I do understand and respect your feelings. But when I see the way in which cattle is transported, pushed around and beaten when brought to the slaughterhouse, it is just as bad or even worse. And yet we continue to eat steak without feeling guilty, don't we?

And let me assure you, I rarely eat frog's legs ...maybe once a year. So please don't hold it against me!

I don't know anybody in France who eat frog legs. Maybe I just haven't met the ones who do eat them but it seems to me that France has better cuisine to offer.

I don't know anybody who eats frog's legs either. But Saint-Aignan has the restaurant, and I hear it is very good. I've eaten there twice, I think, since it opened.

Leon, we've always enjoyed the Crêpiot in S-A at lunchtime. But we don't eat in restaurants much except when we are traveling.

Oh, Jean, that thing about frog's legs seems like a classic urban legend to me.

Ken, Just read on Walt's blog that you're already on your way to Paris while I'm typing this! Have a safe journey and a lovely stay with your family.

Nadege, From now on you can say that you do know somebody who eats frog's legs: me! But I'm not French, so I guess it doesn't count, does it? (lol)

But the question is : do you like them?

Nadege, I hate to admit it, but yes I do. As you said, they taste a bit like chicken but far more delicate. I never prepare them myself, though.
