Candes Saint-Martin, my favourite spot in La Touraine.

Too difficult?

I’m surprised (and somewhat disappointed) that no one noticed the new header photo or tried to guess what the castle’s name is.

Was it too difficult? Maybe … After all there over a thousand castles and manors in La Touraine. Yet, this one is a real landmark. When driving along the Loire River, you simply can’t miss it. I’ve seen it dozens of times, but must humbly admit that I’ve never visited it. And yet it hosts a museum, as well as the production facilities of one of my favourite Loire Valley wines.

Or was it too easy and not worth the effort? :-)

I’ll give you a hint. Here’s another landmark which you will find along the same road …

...a few kilometres further West. Check out the photo's filename for an extra clue!

The chateau is Moncontour in Vouvray. I saw your strapline on the new header but thought I should leave it to others to answer.

Sorry, I even didn't notice the new banner! Maybe the color tones with the old header was maybe similar? It is a beautiful castle.

Sorry, Martine, I hadn't looked in a few days. Of course it's Moncontour. I just finished reading a book in which the 1921 Moncontour vintages are highly praised. I wonder if the Moncontour wines still have such a grand reputation. I've done the Moncontour tour once...

Ken - don't think so. If I remember correctly the chateau was taken over somewhere late 90's?? [or a little earlier] and things changed.

They sell a range of Moncontour in the SuperU at Loches.

Susan, I knew you would recognize it immediately. However, it was very kind of you to give others a chance first.

Nadege, Don't worry. My banners are known for being quite similar, colour and structure-wise. It is a beautiful castle. Maybe I should consider visiting it one day.

Ken, No need to apologize. I don't post that often, so I can't expect people to drop in every day. Was it fiction or non-fiction you were reading on the history of Moncontour. I'm currently 'reading my way' through the 'Le sang de la vigne' series. Fiction, but nevertheless very interesting as well from a 'vinicole' point of view as language-wise. The vocabulary is awesome. This time next year I'll be speaking like a true French woman (lol).

N&A, I've never tried a Moncontour. Would you recommend it?

Bob, Thank you! Next time you're in Europe, you should definitely spend a couple of days in the Loire Valley.
