A room with a view

Well, I'm back from my 5-day break at our Belgian coast. I left last Thursday for Ostend, where I had booked a room with a view. And I wasn't disappointed.

The Channel and Ostend beach on June 9th, 3 p.m.

The weather was surprisingly sunny and warm with hardly any wind. There were enough people to make the place feel pleasantly alive, without the big crowds that tend to trot up and down the promenade.

The beach around 7 p.m.
(Click on the photos to get a detailed view.)

The white cabins you see in the second photo are part of the beach villages that pop-up every summer. July an August are the busiest time of year. Young people like to hang out at these villages, playing trendy music and serving beers and cocktails ...

While I was there the villages were far from being ready and most nights (except Friday) the beach was quiet with just the crushing waves lulling me asleep. The village above is called 'Blue Buddha'. The one some 500 metres further east (photo later) is called 'Monroe Beach'. I guess the names remain the same over the years and become a rendezvous spot for friends who meet there every year.

I shot some 400 photos. And although about half of them are useless, I have enough material to keep you entertained for a while.

P.S. Did I mention that I had a great time?!

I remember going to Ostend with a bunch of colleagues. We had swimsuits--I think it was July or August--and there was a bit of sun, but the wind soon had us covering up. I went and bought one of those windbreaks that comes with a rubber mallet to pound the stakes into the sand. We huddled behind it, getting sunburned after all--on our faces and hands, which were the only parts left exposed.
At least the food is good.

It's good news you enjoyed your short stay at the beach, away from the bustlings of your daily life as well as the mobs that congregate in summer at Ostende. Waiting for more photos.

Hi TOF, Welcome and thank you for posting a comment. Yes, the weather in Ostend can be quite whimsical. But even it is overcast and/or windy, the UV index is very high. A lot of people aren't aware of it and get sunburn. And the food is delicious indeed :)

Bob, Retirement always looked good to me, but after this short break even more. Monday it is 'back to work' though ...

Chm, I wouldn't want to be in Ostend, or any other coastal town, on a sunny weekend in July or August. The place must be crowded. June is just right for me.

Virginia, Thank you. More photos and stories coming up soon.
